MANILA — Lawmakers moved forward Monday with a slate of bills designed to expand the Philippines' calendar of national holidays, reflecting various commemorative observances across historical, religious, and cultural themes.
The House Committee on Revision of Laws gave its approval to the measures during Monday's session, clearing the way for further legislative consideration. The package includes proposals to declare January 22 as National Farmers' Day, which would be recognized as a special working holiday to honor agricultural workers and farming communities throughout the country.
The bills represent efforts by legislators to formally recognize occasions deemed significant to Philippine society and heritage. Special working holidays differ from regular public holidays in their observance and operational requirements.
The approved measures are expected to advance through the regular legislative process in the House of Representatives for consideration by the broader chamber membership and eventual transmission to the Senate for concurrent action.
