House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III has committed to calling together the House Appropriations Committee to deliberate on reforms aimed at enhancing budgeting transparency and oversight mechanisms. The pledge was disclosed Thursday by Kenneth Abante, co-convener of the People's Budget Coalition, following a media briefing after his meeting with the Speaker.
Abante stated that he met with Dy on Wednesday evening to discuss the watchdog group's recommendations for improving the legislative budgeting process. The coalition has been pushing for greater transparency in how government funds are allocated and executed across various departments and agencies.
The proposed reforms are expected to focus on strengthening the oversight role of Congress in budget deliberations and ensuring more public access to budgeting information. Such measures are seen as critical steps toward enhancing accountability in government spending and building public confidence in fiscal management.
The House Appropriations Committee, which handles the review and passage of the national budget, has long been a focal point for civil society groups advocating stronger fiscal transparency. The committee's commitment to discussing these reforms signals potential movement on recommendations that have gained traction among budget monitoring organizations in recent years.
