Houthi missile strike kills 53 Yemeni soldiers in deadliest attack

Yemeni military officials confirmed that Houthi forces targeted a military camp in Shabwa province in the country's south, with the rebel group acknowledging responsibility for the operation. Provincial authorities reported that in addition to the 53 killed, approximately 200 recruits sustained injuries in the attack.
The strike represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces, a struggle that has become a widening flashpoint in regional tensions since fighting resumed in February. The attack effectively ended a ceasefire agreement that had held since 2022, substantially reducing violence across Yemen's prolonged civil war.
The Houthis have increasingly demonstrated their expanding military arsenal in recent weeks, conducting multiple strikes against Saudi Arabia's primary international airport despite the distance of hundreds of kilometres, while simultaneously consolidating control over territory near critical shipping lanes in the Red Sea region. These operations signal the rebel group's enhanced capacity to project power across the Arabian Peninsula.
The escalating attacks have raised concerns among regional stakeholders about the growing threat posed by Houthi military capabilities and their implications for maritime security and broader stability in the Middle East.
