Houthis attack Saudi power station in significant escalation
The Iran-aligned Houthi movement has launched an attack on a power station in Medina, Saudi Arabia, marking the most serious military action since a UN-brokered ceasefire took effect in 2022. The assault represents a significant breach of the truce that has largely halted cross-border hostilities between the group and the Saudi-led coalition.

The Saudi-led coalition confirmed Wednesday that Houthi forces had targeted a power generation facility in Medina, the second-holiest city in Islam. The attack underscores rising tensions following years of relative calm established by the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United Nations.
The incident marks the most serious military engagement between the coalition and the Houthis since the truce began in April 2022. Prior to the ceasefire, the Iranian-backed militant group had conducted numerous cross-border attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including oil facilities and civilian targets.
The exact damage caused by the assault on the Medina power station has not been fully assessed. The attack raises concerns about the stability of the agreement that has significantly reduced violence in the region, though sporadic violations have been documented.
The Houthis have previously justified their attacks as retaliation for the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen that began in 2015. The group has maintained significant military capabilities despite years of coalition airstrikes, though the ceasefire had been largely effective in preventing major new escalations until now.
