The Iranian-backed Houthi movement claimed it had launched an aerial assault on Dammam Airport, a major facility in Saudi Arabia's oil-rich Eastern Province. The claim, if verified, would mark the latest in a series of attacks by the group on Saudi infrastructure.
A spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition confirmed that air defenses had intercepted two drones in the vicinity of Riyadh on Monday. The coalition has been conducting operations against Houthi forces in Yemen since 2015, amid an ongoing conflict that has created a severe humanitarian crisis in the country.
Dammam Airport serves as a critical transportation hub for the Eastern Province and handles significant passenger and cargo traffic. Previous Houthi attacks on Saudi facilities have targeted airports, oil installations, and other infrastructure deemed strategic by the group.
The Houthis have repeatedly claimed responsibility for drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabian targets, citing the coalition's military operations in Yemen as justification. Saudi Arabia's air defense systems have intercepted numerous such attacks over the past several years, though some projectiles have occasionally struck their intended targets.
