The Iran-backed Houthis said they had targeted King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia's capital with a missile attack. The Saudi-led military coalition, which has been engaged in a long-running conflict with the Houthi insurgency in Yemen, stated that its air defences had successfully shot down the projectile before it reached its intended target.
The attack represents an escalation in cross-border strikes that have periodically disrupted civilian air traffic and raised regional tensions. The Houthis have previously claimed responsibility for multiple drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure, including airports and oil facilities.
The Saudi-led coalition has conducted extensive military operations in Yemen since 2015, supporting the internationally recognized government against the Houthi movement. The conflict has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions of Yemenis facing food insecurity and lack of basic services.
No immediate reports indicated whether the missile interception caused any damage or disruptions at the airport. The incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing the kingdom amid the broader regional tensions involving Iran and its allied militias across the Middle East.
