The Houthi movement launched an attack against the Aramco refinery facility in Jazan, located in southwestern Saudi Arabia, according to reports of the incident on Tuesday. The Yemen-based militant group, which maintains close ties with Iran, said the strike was carried out in response to what it described as systematic airspace violations by Saudi forces over Yemeni territory.
The targeted provinces of Saada and Hajjah, both located in northern Yemen, have been focal points of regional military operations in the years-long conflict between the Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition. The group has previously conducted drone and missile attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure, drawing international concern over potential disruptions to global oil markets.
The Houthi movement has routinely justified its military operations against Saudi targets as defensive measures against what it calls foreign aggression and interference in Yemen's internal affairs. Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners have conducted extensive air campaigns in Yemen since 2015, citing counterterrorism objectives and efforts to prevent weapons smuggling.
The attack on the Jazan refinery underscores the continuing volatility in the region, where cross-border tensions between Yemen and Saudi Arabia remain elevated despite periodic ceasefire attempts and diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict.
