How Long Should You Soak Clothes Before Washing? Expert Guide
Soaking clothes overnight in detergent water may seem like a sensible laundry practice, but experts warn it can lead to odour, colour fading, and fabric damage. Here's what you need to know about optimal soaking times for different garment types.

Many Indian households routinely soak clothes in detergent solution overnight before washing, believing it enhances cleaning efficiency. However, prolonged soaking can have unintended consequences that damage fabrics and reduce garment lifespan.
Extended soaking periods, particularly overnight immersion, create conditions that trap moisture and promote bacterial growth, resulting in unpleasant odours. The prolonged contact between detergent chemicals and fabric fibres can also cause colour fading, particularly in darker or brightly coloured garments. Additionally, certain fabric types become weakened when exposed to water and detergent for extended periods.
For everyday wear clothes, a soaking duration of 15 to 30 minutes in detergent water is typically sufficient. Heavily soiled garments may require up to one hour of soaking to effectively loosen stubborn dirt and stains. Delicate fabrics, including silk, satin, and embellished clothing, should be soaked for no more than 10 to 15 minutes to prevent fibre damage and colour loss.
Experts recommend rinsing clothes thoroughly after soaking and proceeding to wash within a reasonable timeframe rather than leaving garments submerged for extended periods. Avoiding overnight soaking, using appropriate detergent quantities, and maintaining proper ventilation during the soaking process are essential practices to preserve garment quality and prevent odour development. Tailoring soaking times to specific fabric types and soil levels ensures cleaner clothes while maintaining their appearance and durability.
