HPCL Q2 profit slides 9% despite robust sales growth

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited's profitability came under pressure in the quarter ended September 30, with net profit contracting to ₹3,483 crore from the prior-year period, despite a significant expansion in sales volumes across its product portfolio.
The state-owned oil refiner and distributor faced headwinds from elevated crude oil costs and higher tax expenses, which compressed profit margins even as the company successfully expanded its commercial reach. Product sales climbed 26.2% year-on-year to ₹1.39 trillion, underscoring strong demand across the refining and distribution segments.
The earnings contraction reflects the challenging macroeconomic environment facing India's energy sector, where crude oil volatility and fiscal pressures continue to impact downstream operators. HPCL's ability to grow sales volumes, however, suggests steady demand across petrol, diesel, and other petroleum products in India's growing economy.
The results highlight the operational leverage challenges facing integrated oil companies, where revenue growth does not necessarily translate to proportional profit expansion when input costs remain elevated and tax obligations increase.
