HRF challenges Meta over Instagram restrictions on activist account

The Human Rights Forum (HRF) has publicly condemned what it describes as arbitrary restrictions imposed on an Instagram account documenting opposition to proposed data center projects in Visakhapatnam. The forum argues that posts critical of the development initiative have been systematically suppressed on the Meta-owned platform.

According to HRF, the curbs extend beyond individual posts to include content from the organisation itself and an investigative documentary examining the data center proposal. The restrictions appear designed to limit visibility of grassroots concerns regarding the project's environmental and social implications.

The forum has called on Meta to provide transparency regarding the removal and restriction of content, specifically seeking disclosure of which authority filed complaints or requests leading to the suppression. HRF contends that without clear identification of the requesting body, users cannot effectively challenge decisions or understand the basis for content moderation actions.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between social media platforms' content moderation practices and free expression advocates in India. Questions persist about whether platform decisions prioritise legitimate grievances from powerful entities over citizens' right to discuss public interest matters online.
