HUL seeks court order against Beco parent over rival ad campaign

Hindustan Unilever Limited has filed a legal petition in the Delhi High Court against Kwick Living (I) Private Limited, the parent company of Beco, over an advertising campaign the conglomerate claims unfairly targets its household cleaning products.

The petition contends that advertisements run by Kwick Living disparage Surf Excel detergent and Vim dishwash liquid through comparative claims that HUL says are misleading and damaging to brand reputation. HUL also alleges the campaign constitutes trademark infringement and violates advertising standards.

The matter touches on long-standing industry concerns regarding comparative advertising practices in the Indian consumer goods sector. While comparative ads are permitted under certain conditions, manufacturers argue they must adhere to strict guidelines to avoid making unsubstantiated claims about competing products.

HUL, a subsidiary of Unilever and one of India's largest consumer goods companies, has sought appropriate court remedies and injunctions to restrain the alleged infringing campaign. The Delhi High Court will now examine the merits of the case and determine whether the advertisements in question breach trademark law or consumer protection standards.
