Authorities conducting an unannounced inspection on August 4 discovered that untreated water from the mining site had contaminated a local river, prompting immediate suspension of operations. This marks the second enforced halt at the facility since November of the previous year, raising fresh questions about environmental safeguards and operational resilience at the location.
The mining company issued a statement linking the breach to severe weather conditions experienced in the area. Heavy rainfall, according to the firm, exceeded the capacity of its water management systems, resulting in the uncontrolled discharge of untreated effluent into the waterway.
The incident underscores ongoing tensions between resource extraction activities and environmental protection in the state. Regulators have intensified scrutiny of mining operations in Perak, particularly regarding water treatment protocols and storm preparedness.
Authorities have not yet announced when the facility may resume operations. The company will be required to demonstrate enhanced containment measures and submit revised environmental management plans before approval for resumption is granted.
