Large-scale protests erupted in Delhi and Mumbai on Monday, with authorities detaining approximately 700 demonstrators demanding accountability from the Election Commission leadership. Members of the Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Congress, and various Left organizations led the agitation in the capital, while separate rallies drew thousands of participants in Mumbai.

The demonstrations targeted Gyanesh Kumar, a senior Election Commission official, with protesters calling for his resignation over the commission's handling of a recent administrative procedure. The opposition parties alleged procedural irregularities and mismanagement in the execution of the exercise, which drew widespread criticism from political circles.

Police deployed additional personnel across protest sites in both cities to manage the crowds. While authorities cited traffic and public order concerns in detaining the protesters, opposition leaders characterized the action as an attempt to suppress legitimate democratic dissent.

The Election Commission has faced mounting pressure from multiple political quarters regarding its administrative practices. Senior party representatives indicated that protests would continue unless their demands for transparency and accountability were met.
