Bang Si-hyuk, who established Hybe and built it into one of South Korea's most prominent entertainment companies, faces allegations that he provided false or misleading information to investors prior to the firm's debut on the Korean stock exchange in October 2020. Police investigators concluded there were grounds to suspect violations related to the company's pre-listing disclosures, according to multiple reports.
The referral to prosecutors represents a formal step in the investigative process and does not constitute a formal charge. Prosecutors will now determine whether to pursue charges against the 52-year-old executive. The case centres on what investors were told about the company's financial position and business prospects in the period leading up to its initial public offering.
Hybe, formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment, has grown into a global entertainment powerhouse, managing globally renowned acts including K-pop phenomenon BTS. The company's 2020 listing was one of the year's major developments in South Korea's entertainment sector, valuing the firm at billions of won.
The investigation represents heightened scrutiny of disclosure practices among South Korean technology and entertainment companies during their transitions to public markets. Regulators in recent years have intensified enforcement against alleged misconduct by company founders and executives during IPO processes across the region.
