Police in Hyderabad have arrested Pavan Kumar, accused of orchestrating an elaborate honeytrap and online extortion racket that targeted multiple victims across the city. Investigators allege the suspect created fraudulent social media profiles to lure unsuspecting individuals before resorting to blackmail and extortion tactics.
According to the police complaint, Kumar systematically targeted victims through fake accounts, subsequently threatening to release compromising content unless they paid substantial sums. The investigation revealed a coordinated pattern of criminal activity spanning several months.
The alleged fraud resulted in confirmed losses exceeding ₹25.16 lakh, though authorities suspect the actual figure may be higher as some victims remain reluctant to file formal complaints due to the sensitive nature of the scheme. Police said Kumar operated with apparent sophistication, using technology to mask his identity while maintaining multiple fraudulent online personas.
Hyderabad Police have registered cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Investigators are examining Kumar's devices and digital records to identify additional victims and accomplices who may have participated in the scheme. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution when interacting with unfamiliar accounts on social media platforms and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
