Hyderabad Metro expansion stalled pending Centre approval and funding

Hyderabad's ambitious plans to expand its rapid transit system face a critical bottleneck as state officials await approval from the Union government to establish a joint venture structure that would unlock funding for the massive infrastructure initiative. The expansion project, spanning 122.9 kilometres and requiring an investment of ₹38,595 crore, has stalled at the funding stage with administrators unable to secure low-interest capital necessary for the acquisition and construction phases. Government sources indicated that the project's progression depends entirely on receiving requisite clearances from New Delhi to set up the Centre-State partnership vehicle that would facilitate access to concessional borrowing facilities. Without formal approval and the establishment of the joint venture arrangement, state authorities are unable to move forward with either land acquisition or construction contracts. Officials have expressed concern that delays in securing federal sanction could jeopardise the project's timeline and ultimately impact the city's urban mobility plans. The proposed expansion would significantly augment Hyderabad's existing metro network, which has become a critical component of the city's transportation infrastructure as it continues to expand economically and demographically.
