Hyderabad police chief vows crackdown on distracted driving menace

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has ordered strict action against an auto-rickshaw driver apprehended for watching a movie on his mobile phone while driving, signalling a broader enforcement push against distracted driving in the city.

In a statement, Sajjanar called upon citizens to play an active role in road safety by flagging instances of drivers using their phones while operating vehicles. He emphasised that such behaviour poses a serious threat to public safety and must not be tolerated.

The police chief urged the public not to hesitate in reporting errant drivers to authorities. He specifically advised citizens to dial the emergency helpline 112 if drivers refuse to cease using phones after being cautioned by passengers or concerned bystanders.

The directive reflects growing concerns over road safety incidents linked to driver distraction. Use of mobile devices while driving has become a significant contributing factor to accidents across Indian cities, prompting increased vigilance from traffic and law enforcement agencies.

The move aligns with broader national efforts to combat dangerous driving practices and reduce traffic-related casualties through community participation and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
