Hyderabad police crack down on fake and tampered vehicle registration plates

The Hyderabad Police have initiated legal action against six cases involving the use of fake, tampered, and illegally modified vehicle registration plates across the city. The crackdown highlights growing concerns over fraudulent registration practices that undermine road safety and law enforcement efforts.

According to police statements, the violations include custom alterations to registration plates, missing or obscured digits, and the use of temporary adhesive stickers as substitutes for official plates. Such modifications enable vehicle owners to evade traffic enforcement, toll collection, and criminal investigations, police officials said.

"Only High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) approved by the government are legally permitted on vehicles," a police spokesperson stated. The HSRP system, mandated across India, incorporates security features including holograms and unique identification codes to prevent counterfeiting and ensure vehicle traceability.

The police department has warned vehicle owners against attempting to modify or replace registration plates with unauthorized alternatives. Violators face criminal prosecution under relevant motor vehicle laws, officials said. The force has urged the public to report any suspicious registration plate modifications to local traffic authorities.
