Hyderabad taps Godavari as key reservoirs face depleting water levels
Facing declining water stocks in its two primary reservoirs, Hyderabad is implementing an emergency pipeline infrastructure project to divert water from the Godavari river. Work is underway to interconnect major water distribution pipelines near the city's outskirts.

Telangana authorities are accelerating infrastructure work to secure additional water supplies for Hyderabad as levels in the Singur and Manjira reservoirs continue to fall. The state water department is constructing pipeline interconnection systems designed to tap Godavari river water and integrate it into the city's existing distribution network.
Construction activity is concentrated near Velimela village, adjacent to the Outer Ring Road, where engineers are linking a 3,000-millimetre-diameter Godavari ring main pipeline with the 1,200-millimetre-diameter gravity mains serving phases three and four of the Manjira water supply project. The interconnection will enable water from the Godavari to flow directly into Hyderabad's supply system.
The initiative underscores growing water stress in India's IT hub, where rising demand from the city's expanding population and industrial base has strained traditional water sources. Officials project the new connection will provide critical relief during periods when reservoir levels dip below operational thresholds.
Once operational, the Godavari diversion is expected to supplement existing supplies and improve system resilience during peak demand seasons and dry periods. The project forms part of broader water security measures being pursued across the state capital.
