The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has endorsed Pakistan's nuclear security framework after completing its first physical protection advisory mission to the country. A seven-member IAEA team concluded the International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) mission on Friday, following a 12-day visit from September 28 to October 9.
The mission, hosted by Pakistan's Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), examined the country's legislative and regulatory structure governing nuclear security. The team also conducted on-site assessments of physical protection measures at a nuclear facility to evaluate implementation of established protocols.
"The IPPAS team noted that Pakistan has established a robust nuclear security regime for physical protection of nuclear material and nuclear facilities, which was observed to be appropriately implemented at the facility visited," the IAEA said in a statement released following the mission's conclusion.
The Vienna-based agency noted that Pakistan's nuclear security framework undergoes periodic reviews to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with international standards. The advisory mission represents part of the IAEA's broader mandate to assist member states in strengthening safeguards and security measures across their nuclear programs.
