IAF's Abhinandan Varthaman retires, joins Goa-based airline FLY91

Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman has concluded his tenure with the Indian Air Force and joined FLY91, a Goa-based airline, marking a significant transition from military aviation to the commercial sector. Varthaman, who gained nationwide prominence following his engagement with Pakistan Air Force jets in February 2019, completed his move to the airline in August.

The pilot's combat operations during the aerial confrontation two years ago brought him into public focus when he successfully engaged a Pakistani F-16 fighter during cross-border operations in the Jammu and Kashmir region. He was subsequently captured by Pakistani forces but returned to India following diplomatic negotiations, receiving a hero's welcome upon his arrival.

Varthaman's decision to pursue a civilian aviation career reflects a broader trend among experienced military pilots transitioning to commercial airlines in India. His extensive training and experience in high-performance military aircraft positions him well for roles in the rapidly expanding domestic aviation sector.
