ICAI unveils sustainability assurance standard ahead of 2027 rollout

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has unveiled SSA 5000, a comprehensive standard governing sustainability assurance engagements that will become mandatory from April 1, 2027. The new framework establishes general requirements and procedures for accountants verifying an entity's sustainability-related disclosures across environmental, social and governance domains including climate risk, labour practices and biodiversity.

The standard represents India's formal alignment with the International Standard on Sustainability Assurance (ISSA 5000), reflecting global convergence on how companies report non-financial performance. ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D indicated the move would strengthen investor and stakeholder confidence in corporate sustainability claims, addressing growing demand for credible, independently verified environmental and social reporting.

ICAAI officials noted the domestic standard incorporates two significant carve-outs from the international version: provisions governing joint audits and forward-looking statements have been excluded from SSA 5000. These modifications reflect India-specific regulatory considerations while maintaining substantive alignment with global benchmarks.

The issuance marks a watershed moment for sustainability reporting governance in India, formalizing the assurance process for disclosures that increasingly influence capital allocation decisions. With implementation more than two years away, Indian businesses and audit firms have a defined timeline to prepare for the transition to structured sustainability verification requirements.
