The Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), a premier research institution under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, has developed deboning technology aimed at making milkfish more palatable to Indian consumers.

The initiative addresses a longstanding consumer preference barrier, as the presence of fine intermuscular bones in milkfish has historically limited its acceptance in retail and household markets. By removing these skeletal structures, researchers believe the processed fish will appeal to a broader demographic, including consumers wary of bone-related inconveniences.

According to M. Kailasam, Director of ICAR-CIBA, the deboning process is expected to encourage wider consumption and unlock greater commercial potential for milkfish farming across India's coastal and brackishwater regions.

The development comes as India seeks to expand aquaculture production and diversify its seafood offerings. Milkfish farming has gained traction in recent years due to its hardiness and relatively lower input requirements, making it an attractive option for farmers in coastal states.

The technology represents a value-addition initiative that could enhance the marketability of locally farmed milkfish, potentially benefiting producers and consumers alike while strengthening India's aquaculture sector.
