ICC praises Nobel Peace Prize for Indian-origin rights advocate Pillay

The International Criminal Court has hailed the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Navi Pillay, the renowned human rights champion of Indian origin, recognising her decades-long advocacy for justice and accountability on the global stage.

ICC President Tomoko Akane underscored the particular importance of Pillay's recognition at a time when the international legal order faces mounting pressures and threats to the rule of law worldwide. The award represents validation of efforts to uphold universal principles of human rights and justice, Akane indicated in her remarks.

Pillay, who has held prominent positions including UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has been a steadfast advocate for accountability in cases involving mass atrocities and violations of international humanitarian law. Her work has spanned decades of advocacy for marginalised communities and conflict-affected populations across multiple continents.

The ICC's commendation reflects the court's view that independent accountability mechanisms and human rights advocacy remain essential foundations for establishing lasting peace in conflict-affected regions. Pillay's career has exemplified the connection between justice mechanisms and sustainable conflict resolution, the court noted.

The Nobel Prize committee's decision has been welcomed across international legal and human rights circles as recognition of the critical work undertaken by independent advocates to strengthen global justice institutions.
