ICG launches search operation as Panama-flagged cargo vessel sinks

The Indian Coast Guard has initiated a comprehensive search-and-rescue operation following the sinking of a Panama-flagged merchant vessel in waters off the Indian coast. The ship, which was en route to Singapore with a cargo of iron ore sourced from Odisha, went down with 24 crew members aboard.

Coast Guard assets including ships and aircraft have been mobilised to locate survivors and provide emergency assistance. The operation commenced immediately after the vessel issued a distress signal, with rescue teams coordinating with maritime authorities to cover the affected area systematically.

The cargo vessel was transporting iron ore extracted from mines in Odisha state, one of India's major mineral-producing regions. The Panama flag allows the vessel to operate under international maritime regulations, though such vessels often operate on international trade routes connecting major Asian ports.

Search operations are ongoing as the Coast Guard works to account for all crew members aboard the vessel. The incident highlights the hazards faced by merchant shipping in regional waters and the critical role of rapid maritime response in rescue efforts.
