India's second-largest private sector bank ICICI Bank posted robust earnings growth in the July-September quarter, with consolidated net profit climbing to Rs 14,843 crore from Rs 12,362 crore in the corresponding period last year. The 20 percent expansion in profitability reflected strong underlying business momentum across the lender's loan and deposit portfolio. Net interest income, a key metric of lending profitability, increased 17.7 percent to Rs 25,339 crore, surpassing Bloomberg consensus estimates of Rs 25,165.98 crore and underlining the bank's ability to grow its core lending business. However, the bank's net interest margin—the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits—declined to 4.18 percent, signalling compression in lending spreads amid intense competitive pressures in India's banking sector. The margin contraction reflects the broader industry challenge of managing deposit costs while maintaining lending growth in an environment of elevated interest rate levels. Despite the margin headwinds, ICICI Bank's profit growth indicates the lender is successfully expanding its advances base to offset tighter spreads, a strategy pursued by most large Indian banks navigating the current rate environment.
