IDBI Bank Q2 profit slumps 39% as prior-year NSDL gains fade

IDBI Bank reported a 39 per cent year-on-year decline in net profit for the quarter ended September 30, posting ₹2,205 crore in earnings compared to the prior-year quarter. The steeper-than-expected contraction reflects a high comparison base, with second-quarter FY26 results bolstered by substantial gains from the sale of the bank's stake in the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).

The one-time NSDL windfall significantly inflated prior-year profitability, creating a challenging comparison for the current quarter. Adjusting for this exceptional item, IDBI Bank's underlying profit growth accelerated 14 per cent year-on-year, indicating improving operational performance across core business segments.

The variance underscores the importance of distinguishing between recurring earnings and non-recurring gains when assessing the bank's financial health. Analysts tracking the state-owned lender have flagged the NSDL comparison as a key factor in interpreting quarterly results, with normalised metrics offering a clearer picture of earnings momentum.

IDBI Bank continues to navigate a competitive banking landscape amid evolving regulatory dynamics and macroeconomic conditions. The bank's core profitability improvements reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen asset quality and operational efficiency across its retail and corporate lending portfolios.
