The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded a 20 percent increase in the volume of electricity traded during August, reflecting sustained momentum in the country's power sector transactions. The exchange, which facilitates real-time and day-ahead electricity markets, continued to attract participants across generation, distribution, and industrial segments.

Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) trading also remained active during the period, with approximately 2.91 lakh certificates changing hands. RECs represent an important instrument for generators to monetise renewable power production and for obligated entities to meet renewable purchase obligations mandated under Indian regulations.

The month-on-month growth in trading volumes reflects increasing confidence among market participants in transparent, price-discovery mechanisms offered by power exchanges. Utilities and power producers have progressively shifted transactions from bilateral agreements to exchange-based platforms, driven by competitive pricing and operational efficiency gains.

India's power market has witnessed structural reforms over the past decade, with exchanges playing a central role in price discovery and risk management. IEX's performance metrics are watched closely as indicators of underlying health in the country's electricity sector as demand continues to rise across residential, commercial, and industrial segments.
