The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has initiated a pilot programme deploying unassisted Aadhaar facial authentication to expedite know-your-customer (KYC) procedures for overseas Indians seeking to invest through Indian financial services hubs. The initiative aims to eliminate paperwork in cross-border account opening by leveraging biometric verification technology already embedded in the Aadhaar digital identity system.
The pilot is being rolled out across four international jurisdictions, with the regulator testing the technology's effectiveness in different regulatory and operational environments. This approach addresses a longstanding friction point for non-resident Indians, who traditionally faced delays and documentation burdens when establishing investment accounts remotely.
By enabling paperless digital onboarding through facial recognition, IFSCA seeks to enhance the ease of doing business for overseas Indians while maintaining compliance with anti-money laundering and customer identification standards. The move aligns with broader government efforts to simplify financial services access for the diaspora and boost capital flows through regulated channels.
The pilot's success could pave the way for wider implementation, potentially reshaping how financial institutions verify the identity of international clients. IFSCA will assess system performance, user experience, and regulatory compliance outcomes before determining next steps for the authentication mechanism across its centres.
