IGL to supply piped gas to 22 Northern Railway sites across Delhi-NCR

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has inked a pact with the Delhi Division of Northern Railway to deliver piped natural gas (PNG) to 22 railway installations spread across Delhi-NCR, marking a significant push toward cleaner fuel adoption. The move aligns with the government's PNG Drive 3.0 programme aimed at transitioning India's infrastructure away from fossil fuels.

Under the agreement, IGL will initially supply approximately 3,000 standard cubic metres of gas per day. This conversion is expected to eliminate the daily consumption of roughly 500 kg of liquefied petroleum gas and 2,500 litres of diesel across the railway network, according to IGL's statement.

The gas supply initiative will service multiple railway facilities including mechanised laundries, officers' rest houses, base kitchens, running rooms, subordinate rest houses, and guard and ticket examiner lobbies. These establishments are located across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. Five key mechanised laundries—at Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Old Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi—will transition to PNG for boiler operations, reducing their reliance on conventional heating fuels.

The partnership underscores Northern Railway's commitment to environmental sustainability while enabling cost efficiencies through cleaner energy adoption. IGL anticipates that gas consumption under the initiative will expand as more railway facilities come online with the conversion process.
