IHH to boost Fortis stake to 51% amid expansion push to 10,000 beds

Malaysia-based IHH Healthcare has committed to raising its controlling stake in Fortis Healthcare to 51 per cent over the next three to five years, while planning to expand combined bed capacity to around 10,000 by 2031. The announcement comes after India's Supreme Court dismissed a legal challenge to a Delhi High Court order requiring a forensic audit of the Indian hospital chain.

IHH to boost Fortis stake to 51% amid expansion push to 10,000 beds

IHH Healthcare said it will pursue an expanded presence in India's healthcare sector through deeper integration of its Fortis and Gleneagles platforms and significant capacity additions. The Malaysian healthcare operator signalled its long-term commitment to the Indian market by pledging to "fully cooperate" with the forensic audit mandated by the courts, while expressing confidence that an independent review would objectively establish facts surrounding its 2018 investment in Fortis.

The Supreme Court's September 25 decision to dispose of Fortis Healthcare's special leave petition removes a significant legal obstacle facing the company. The petition had challenged a Delhi High Court order that mandated a forensic audit and made certain observations concerning the company's operations and governance.

IHH's expansion plans represent one of the largest private healthcare growth initiatives in India. The operator currently holds a significant stake in Fortis Healthcare and operates premium hospital networks in India and Southeast Asia through its Gleneagles brand. The integrated platform is expected to leverage operational synergies and strengthen service delivery across both networks.

The forensic audit, now cleared to proceed without legal impediment, will conduct an independent examination of Fortis Healthcare's financial records and operations. IHH's commitment to cooperate with the audit process signals an effort to resolve governance concerns and strengthen stakeholder confidence in the merged entity's operations and future direction.
