The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru announced that Professor Mahesh Kakde has been awarded the Ramanujan Prize for 2026, honouring his outstanding research in algebraic number theory. The prize, named after the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, recognises exceptional mathematical contributions from researchers across the developing world.

Kakde's research has focused on advancing understanding in algebraic number theory, a field that explores the properties of algebraic integers and their applications in solving fundamental mathematical problems. His work has contributed significantly to contemporary developments in this classical area of mathematics.

The Ramanujan Prize, administered by the International Mathematical Union in association with the Department of Science and Technology, is awarded annually to mathematicians under the age of 45 from developing countries. The recognition underscores the calibre of mathematical research being conducted at India's leading research institutions and positions IISc among the nation's premier centres for theoretical mathematics.

Kakde's achievement adds to the distinguished legacy of Indian mathematicians and reflects the continuing contributions of Indian researchers to global mathematical science.
