IIT, IIM founders lag as India's startup boom accelerates

The number of IIT and IIM alumni launching tech startups has dropped significantly in the first eight months of 2026, raising questions about the engagement of India's elite institution graduates with entrepreneurship despite the nation's thriving startup landscape.

According to recent data, just 79 IIT alumni and 20 IIM alumni founded tech startups during January-August 2026, a marked decline from 307 and 71 respectively across the full year 2025. The figures suggest that even as India's overall startup formation accelerates, the contribution from these historically prominent institutions has waned.

The trend points to shifting career preferences among top-tier graduates, many of whom continue to opt for lucrative positions in established technology companies or multinational corporations. Global economic uncertainty and recent market corrections in the startup ecosystem may also be tempering entrepreneurial ambitions among this cohort, analysts suggest.

Industry observers note that while IIT and IIM alumni remain influential in India's startup scene as investors and advisors, their direct participation as founders has become less dominant as entrepreneurship spreads across a broader base of educational and professional backgrounds. The data underscores a democratization of India's startup ecosystem, even as questions persist about whether elite institutions are adequately nurturing an entrepreneurial culture among their students.

The figures come as India continues to be recognized as one of the world's fastest-growing startup ecosystems, with venture funding and new company formation remaining robust despite periodic headwinds.
