IIT Madras startup tests rotating detonation engine for next-gen weapons

D-Propulse has completed initial trials of a rotating detonation engine (RDE), a compact propulsion system designed to power smaller, high-speed defence platforms including tactical missiles and drones. The technology, developed through the institute's incubation programme, represents a significant advancement in indigenous propulsion research for India's defence sector.

Unlike conventional engines, rotating detonation engines operate on continuous detonation waves that rotate around a chamber, enabling higher energy density and improved efficiency. This architecture allows for reduced engine size while delivering superior thrust characteristics—a critical advantage for applications requiring rapid acceleration and sustained high-velocity flight.

The successful demonstration validates the core engineering principles behind the technology. However, D-Propulse faces considerable work ahead before the system enters operational deployment. Extended duration trials are required to assess performance consistency, while obtaining regulatory certification from relevant defence authorities represents another essential milestone for commercialisation and integration into defence platforms.

India has been progressively expanding its domestic propulsion research capabilities amid a strategic push toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. IIT Madras-backed ventures like D-Propulse exemplify the country's broader emphasis on leveraging academic research institutions to develop cutting-edge military technologies.
