IIT researchers develop ultra-efficient device for next-generation AI computing

Researchers at IIT Guwahati and IIT Kharagpur have jointly developed an advanced device that consolidates multiple computing functions into a single ultrathin platform, marking a significant step toward more efficient AI systems. The device combines visual sensing capabilities with memory storage and processing units, addressing a major challenge in modern computing: energy consumption.

Laboratory testing demonstrated that the integrated device operates with approximately 500 times less energy compared to conventional systems that rely on separate components for vision, memory and processing tasks. This substantial reduction in power requirements could have far-reaching implications for portable electronics, autonomous systems and edge computing applications across industries.

The breakthrough builds on India's growing research capabilities in semiconductor and materials science. By eliminating the need for multiple discrete components and the energy losses associated with data transfer between them, the unified device achieves greater efficiency at the hardware level. Such architectural innovations are increasingly critical as global demand grows for AI systems that can operate effectively with minimal power consumption.

The development underscores India's potential to contribute innovative solutions to global computing challenges. As industries worldwide seek to deploy AI applications more sustainably, technologies that reduce energy consumption at the device level offer practical pathways toward greener and more efficient computing infrastructure for the future.
