IITs to establish dedicated mental health professional cadre
India's top technical institutions are planning to create a permanent corps of mental health specialists to support students, faculty and staff. The initiative, long under consideration, comes amid heightened scrutiny following multiple campus suicides this year.

Indian Institutes of Technology are moving forward with plans to establish a dedicated cadre of mental health professionals tasked with safeguarding the psychological wellbeing of their entire campus communities. According to IIT Directors, the proposal aims to create a structured, professional framework for mental health services across the premier technical institutions.
While recent student deaths have intensified focus on the issue, Directors from multiple IITs have clarified that conceptualisation of the cadre predates recent incidents by at least two years. The initiative represents a systematic approach to addressing mental health rather than a reactive response to individual tragedies.
The renewed emphasis comes following a series of high-profile suicides across IIT campuses. An IIT Bombay student died by suicide in September, discovered in his hostel room, while an IIT Delhi student's death in August sparked significant campus unrest. These incidents have reignited broader concerns about student mental health at India's leading technical universities.
Previously, various IITs have implemented mental health initiatives, though these have typically operated on an ad-hoc basis. The proposed cadre would represent a more comprehensive, institutionalised approach to psychological support services across multiple campuses. The move reflects growing recognition among educational leadership that structured mental health infrastructure is essential to student welfare.
