SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — The Ilocos Region faces substantial agricultural losses as the combined impact of three tropical cyclones and persistent monsoon conditions continues to devastate farming communities across the province.
According to the Department of Agriculture's latest damage assessment released Thursday, the region has sustained P637.17 million in agricultural losses stemming from Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay and Neneng, along with the ongoing southwest monsoon system. The widespread destruction has directly impacted 20,294 farmers throughout the region.
The sequential nature of the weather disturbances has prevented farmers from adequately protecting their crops and has compounded recovery efforts. Officials indicate that multiple areas within Ilocos have experienced flooding, crop inundation, and structural damage to farming infrastructure.
The Department of Agriculture continues to conduct field assessments to evaluate the full extent of damage across the region. Agricultural officials are working to determine relief and rehabilitation measures for affected farming communities.
