SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — Thirty-seven public schools across Ilocos Norte have received rainwater harvesting drums, marking a significant step in the province's water conservation strategy and climate resilience efforts.
Provincial Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos spearheaded the distribution initiative, which targets schools identified as priority recipients based on their water security needs and vulnerability to drought conditions. The catchment systems are designed to capture and store rainwater for use during dry seasons, reducing dependence on conventional water supplies.
The move comes as meteorological agencies continue to monitor atmospheric conditions indicative of El Niño development. The weather phenomenon typically brings reduced rainfall and prolonged dry spells to the Philippines, potentially straining water availability in schools and communities.
Officials emphasized that the rainwater collection infrastructure serves dual purposes: it provides schools with a reliable backup water source while promoting environmental awareness among students. The initiative complements existing provincial programs aimed at building climate adaptation capacity across educational institutions.
The Ilocos Norte government indicated plans to expand the rainwater harvesting program to additional schools and public facilities in coming months, depending on resource availability and local water security assessments.
