Ilocos Region battles leptospirosis surge as flooding persists

SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — The Department of Health (DOH) is intensifying public alerts about leptospirosis as the Ilocos Region grapples with ongoing flooding that has created conditions favorable for the disease's transmission. Leptospirosis, a severe bacterial infection spread through water contaminated by infected animals—particularly rats—has emerged as a significant health concern as heavy rains continue to inundate communities across the region.

To date, the region has documented 85 confirmed leptospirosis cases, with six fatalities attributed to the infection. Health officials have urged residents to exercise extreme caution around floodwaters, emphasizing that even brief exposure to contaminated water poses substantial health risks.

The bacterial infection, transmitted primarily through contact with contaminated water sources, can develop into a life-threatening condition if left untreated. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle pain, and in severe cases, kidney failure and bleeding complications. Early diagnosis and prompt antibiotic treatment significantly improve patient outcomes.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid wading through floodwaters whenever possible, properly cover any open wounds, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop following potential exposure. The DOH continues to monitor the situation and coordinate response efforts with local health facilities throughout the Ilocos Region.
