The municipal government of Santa Lucia in Ilocos Sur has rolled out the Paleng-QR PH Plus program, a digital payment system designed to facilitate cashless transactions across markets, public transport, and small businesses throughout the area.
The initiative represents a collaborative effort between the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government to accelerate the shift toward digital financial services at the grassroots level. By enabling QR code-based payments, the program aims to reduce reliance on physical currency while improving transaction efficiency.
Market vendors, jeepney operators, and small business owners in Santa Lucia have been enrolled in the system, allowing consumers to make purchases and pay fares using their mobile devices. Officials anticipate the program will enhance financial transparency, reduce cash handling risks, and provide better access to formal banking services for merchants and commuters.
The Paleng-QR PH Plus initiative reflects broader efforts by Philippine financial authorities to promote digital literacy and financial inclusion in provincial communities, positioning smaller municipalities as participants in the country's digital economy transition.
