SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — The municipal government of Sta. Lucia has declared its intention to halt unauthorized and environmentally damaging dredging operations within its territorial waters, citing concerns over marine ecosystem degradation and threats to coastal livelihoods.
The announcement follows an inspection by municipal officials on Monday, September 7, of dredging activities occurring off Barangay Nangalisan. The unannounced survey was conducted to assess the scope and potential environmental impact of the operations.
Municipal authorities emphasized that any dredging projects within Sta. Lucia's jurisdiction must comply with environmental protection standards and obtain proper authorization from local government. Officials noted that unregulated dredging poses significant risks to fish stocks, coral formations, and other marine resources upon which local fishing communities depend for their survival.
