ILOILO CITY — Air quality across Metro Iloilo deteriorated to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups on Sunday, with regional environmental officials continuing to monitor atmospheric conditions amid ongoing haze. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Region 6 attributed the poor air quality to transboundary pollution, with indications pointing toward smoke emissions from forest fires in Indonesia.
The DENR-EMB Region 6 operates a Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station to track pollution levels across the metropolitan area. Officials remained on alert as haze conditions persisted throughout the region, with particular concern for vulnerable populations including children, elderly residents, and individuals with respiratory conditions.
The transboundary haze phenomenon is not uncommon during certain seasons in Southeast Asia, when forest fires in neighboring countries create smoke that drifts across regional borders. Authorities have advised residents, particularly those in sensitive health categories, to limit outdoor activities and take preventive health measures until air quality improves.
