ILOILO CITY — Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW), the primary water service provider for Iloilo City and surrounding municipalities in the province, is accelerating preparations to address the anticipated impacts of a powerful El Niño phenomenon forecast to strengthen through the first quarter of next year.

The utility company is mobilizing resources and implementing contingency protocols to manage potential supply disruptions as weather patterns associated with the El Niño effect intensify. MPIW has flagged the possibility of water supply declining to approximately 50 million units, prompting the need for comprehensive mitigation strategies.

Preparations include enhancing water storage capacity, optimizing distribution systems, and coordinating with local government units to develop drought response measures. The utility is also expected to issue advisories to consumers regarding water conservation practices during the predicted dry period.

El Niño episodes typically bring reduced rainfall to Southeast Asian regions, creating challenges for water utilities dependent on consistent precipitation for reservoir replenishment. Iloilo province, which experiences seasonal water demand fluctuations, faces particular vulnerability during such climatic episodes.

MPIW has urged residents and businesses within its service area to prepare for possible water rationing and implement water-saving measures to help manage demand during the anticipated dry months.
