IMA cautions against self-medication as H1N1 flu cases surge during monsoon

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sounded an alert regarding the rising incidence of H1N1 influenza cases across India during the monsoon season. Metropolitan regions, particularly Delhi, have recorded over 1,770 laboratory-confirmed cases, reflecting the seasonal trend typical of monsoon months when respiratory infections spread more readily.

The surge in H1N1 cases follows the annual pattern observed during monsoon seasons, when increased humidity and moisture create favourable conditions for the spread of viral infections. The IMA's advisory specifically targets the growing tendency among patients to self-medicate with over-the-counter drugs and antibiotics without consulting healthcare professionals.

According to medical experts, improper self-medication can lead to drug resistance, delayed diagnosis, and complications. The IMA has emphasised that individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, and body aches should consult qualified medical practitioners rather than resort to self-treatment. Early professional intervention can facilitate timely diagnosis and appropriate antiviral treatment when necessary.

Healthcare authorities recommend standard preventive measures including hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. Individuals with underlying medical conditions or compromised immune systems are advised to exercise particular caution and seek medical guidance promptly if symptoms develop.
