IMA warns against antibiotic misuse as H1N1 cases surge across India

The Indian Medical Association has issued a fresh advisory urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid indiscriminate use of antibiotics and antiviral drugs as H1N1 cases show an upward trend across the country. Inappropriate consumption of these medications can lead to drug resistance and complicate treatment outcomes, the association warned.

The IMA emphasised that H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu, is largely preventable through basic hygiene practices. The organisation recommended that individuals wash their hands frequently with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds, or alternatively use alcohol-based hand sanitisers when soap and water are unavailable.

Beyond hand hygiene, health authorities stressed the need for respiratory discipline, including covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and maintaining distance from symptomatic individuals. Those displaying flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, and sore throat should seek medical guidance rather than resorting to self-treatment.

The advisory comes as seasonal influenza activity typically peaks during winter months across South Asia. Health officials urged the public to remain vigilant while following established preventive protocols, noting that vaccination remains the most effective shield against H1N1 for high-risk groups including the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying medical conditions.
