The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a cautionary alert for heat-related stress across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts as oppressive conditions grip the Maharashtra coast. The yellow alert, which flags moderate weather concerns requiring public awareness, comes as the region experiences persistently high temperatures combined with elevated moisture levels.
Temperature readings across the metropolis varied significantly, with the Santacruz weather station recording a maximum of 37.4°C, while Colaba logged 35.6°C on the day in question. The disparity in readings reflects the varying microclimates across the sprawling city, with inland areas typically recording higher peaks than coastal zones.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity levels poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations including the elderly, young children and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Health authorities typically recommend increased fluid intake, reduced outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours and monitoring for signs of heat exhaustion during such alerts.
The yellow alert remains in effect for the specified districts as meteorological conditions are forecast to persist. Residents have been advised to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to mitigate heat-related health impacts. The IMD continues to monitor atmospheric conditions and will update its advisories as warranted.
