IMDA audit uncovers harmful content in major app stores

The Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) conducted its inaugural audit of app stores operating in Singapore, identifying a range of concerning applications that contravene content guidelines. The examination revealed apps promoting nudification technology, violent content centred on murder, and gambling themes—content types that regulators consider potentially harmful to younger users.

The audit assessed how effectively app store operators implement content moderation and age-gating mechanisms to prevent children from accessing inappropriate material. While problematic applications were discovered across various categories, the IMDA found that both major platforms have established foundational safety protocols.

A key finding was that app stores have implemented reasonably effective age verification checks, a critical measure for restricting access to age-restricted content. These controls represent the first line of defence against minors encountering harmful applications, though the audit suggests room for improvement remains.

The regulatory review marks the IMDA's first systematic assessment of how app stores police their offerings in compliance with Singapore's content standards. The findings are expected to inform future regulatory guidance and industry best practices as authorities balance consumer protection with innovation in the digital marketplace.
