IMF delegation to assess Sri Lanka's economic reform progress next week

The IMF delegation is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka next week to conduct a comprehensive review of the country's Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme and hold Article IV consultations with local officials.

The Article IV talks, a standard IMF procedure conducted periodically with member nations, will evaluate Sri Lanka's macroeconomic performance and financial stability alongside the technical review of EFF implementation. The EFF arrangement, agreed upon in March 2023, has been central to the island nation's efforts to stabilise its economy following severe financial distress.

During the visit, the IMF team will assess progress on key reform commitments including fiscal consolidation, monetary policy adjustments, and structural changes to strengthen governance and market operations. Officials will also review data on inflation trends, foreign exchange reserves, and debt sustainability metrics.

The delegation's findings are expected to inform decisions regarding the timing of the next EFF tranche review and potential policy adjustments. Successful completion of review benchmarks has been critical for Sri Lanka's access to IMF funding and confidence-building among international creditors and investors.

The visit underscores the ongoing engagement between Sri Lankan authorities and the fund as the country works toward sustained economic recovery and debt sustainability over the medium term.
