IMF flags risks to India's seven percent growth trajectory

India's projected seven percent growth rate faces multiple vulnerabilities that policymakers must monitor closely, according to the International Monetary Fund's assessment. While the economy has demonstrated resilience in recent years, external and domestic pressures could potentially derail the expansion trajectory if left unaddressed.

Global economic uncertainty ranks among the primary concerns flagged by the IMF. Geopolitical tensions, volatile commodity prices, and tightening financial conditions in major economies could crimp demand for Indian exports and foreign investment inflows. Additionally, any sharp slowdown in global growth would have direct spillover effects on India's trade-dependent sectors.

Domestic structural challenges also warrant attention, the Fund has indicated. Inflation pressures, fiscal constraints at both central and state levels, and infrastructure bottlenecks could constrain productivity gains. Labour market dynamics and skill shortages in key sectors may also limit the economy's capacity to sustain elevated growth rates.

Despite these headwinds, the IMF maintains a constructive view of India's medium-term prospects, citing strong fundamentals and policy frameworks. However, maintaining the growth momentum will require sustained focus on fiscal consolidation, inflation management, and investment in human and physical capital, according to the Fund's analysis.
