IMF warns of convergence of AI, oil, debt risks for global economy
The International Monetary Fund has flagged a dangerous intersection of challenges threatening economic stability, with artificial intelligence gains concentrated among wealthy nations while energy and debt pressures mount globally.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is generating economic growth, but benefits remain heavily skewed toward developed economies, according to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. The unequal distribution of AI-driven gains risks widening disparities between nations, even as other headwinds complicate the broader economic outlook.
Georgieva highlighted what she termed a "risk cocktail" comprising three distinct threats: the narrow concentration of AI advancement and its economic returns, elevated crude oil prices that strain developing economies' budgets, and mounting debt burdens across multiple countries. The combination presents a complex challenge for policymakers navigating the post-pandemic recovery.
For India and other emerging markets, the convergence carries particular significance. While these nations stand to benefit from AI technologies, they face immediate pressures from energy costs and fiscal constraints. The IMF's assessment underscores the need for coordinated policy responses to ensure technological benefits are shared more broadly and to mitigate vulnerabilities in commodity-dependent economies.
The warning comes as global growth remains fragile, with central banks managing inflation concerns while governments balance support for emerging sectors against fiscal sustainability. Experts suggest developing nations must prioritize investments in digital infrastructure and workforce development to capture a larger share of AI-driven opportunities while managing near-term economic pressures.
